I totally agree with the views expressed by you. What is happening in Syria is a snapshot of what is happening in the greater Middle East which in turn shapes the bulk of the content and course of the foreign policies of the regional and global powers.Thus Middle East politics is the pivot around which the global politics is moving.It is the first major battle of the New Cold War,started again by the USA for preservation of the international capitalism.However the situation is so complex due to multiplicity of factors and forces involved that it is well nigh impossible to discern what is happening there ,not to speak of predicting with precision the future course of events.There are at least seven types of conflicts,crises and wars going on among the stakeholders,having multiple agenda and with strange sets of combination.These are;
1.People's War against their unrepresentative rulers for good governance,empowerment,quality of life,equality of opportunity etc.Result of interplay of underlying forces of demography,technological advancements,economic and social globalization ,this war is serving as a base as well as the context against which other conflicts and crises are defined.
2.Power projection by the global powers to increase their sphere of influence in an arena which has been strategically so important that any loss or gain of influence will determine the relative global power equations
3.Struggle for hegemony by the regional powers with active collaboration of their respective sponsor world powers,to fill the vacuum created by the recent developments
4.Global war for hydrocarbon and other resources as well as the markets for selling their goods ,services and military hardware
5.Clash of civilizations by default and not by design is also very subtly shaping the perceptions of the policy makers which ultimately shapes the policy formulation.
6.Sectarian conflicts which had been so far ignored or suppressed are now not only visible but are also being used as tools of statecraft by some of the regimes to suppress people's aspirations in their respective countries
7.Tribal and racial antagonism which for centuries has been defining feature of Middle East politics is also a major role to play in exacerbating the current imbroglio.
As a result of the above not only Syria but the neighbouring countries are going to witness greater instability,unrest and attending cosequences
