Egyptian activists said, Ahmad al-Gazawi, lawyer and human rights activist was detained for filing a complaint against Saudi Arabia for its mistreatment of Egyptian citizens in Saudi prisons.

Saudi authorities denied that and said he was arrested for trying to smuggle anti-anxiety drugs into the country.

The Saudi news agency, citing a foreign ministry official, said the demonstrations were “unjustified” and attempts to storm the missions threatened the safety of diplomatic staff.

The Egyptian state news agency reported that Egypt’s military ruler Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, contacted the Saudi government over its unexected decision to recall its representative to Cairo.

The state Egyptian demonstrators called for the expulsion of the Saudi ambassador in Cairo.

 Anti-Saudi attitude has sparked in recent years following reports of Egyptian nationals being mistreated in the kingdom.

On Monday, Egypt’s Arabic Network for Human Rights Information issued a statement, saying Gizawi’s detention followed a sentence of one year in prison and 20 lashes delivered against him in absentia for criticism of the Saudi rulers.

The protests come as Saudi Arabia has been faced with a continued wave of anti-regime protests that has rocked the Middle East with protesters calling for political reform.
