“Responding to the Egyptian efforts, we and the armed resistance announce our commitment to stop this round of confrontation as long as the occupation commits to stopping its crimes.” Al-Qassam Brigades said in a statement released late on Wednesday.

Israel did not comment on the statement as it usually shuns responding whenever mediators reach an accord with Gaza militants as Israel refuses to recognize them citing the Islamists’ refusal to acknowledge Israel’s existence, according to Reuters.

The statement also said that the Brigades had fired 96 rockets and nine mortars across the border during the recent wave of violence.

As the violence rumbled on, a senior Gaza official had told the AFP news agency that Egypt was in contact with Israel and the militant groups in a bid to halt violence.

Eight Palestinians have lost their lives in Israeli air strikes in Gaza since Monday.

The violence erupted on Monday after an attack launched from Egypt’s Sinai desert killed an Israeli civilian.

Meanwhile on Wednesday, Israel launched more air strikes on what it called Hamas security bases in Gaza, with medics saying two Palestinian boys were killed.

Palestinians fired more than 50 rockets into Israel on Wednesday, causing no casualties, police and the Israeli army said, Reuters reported.

Israeli attacks killed four Palestinians on Monday and two teenagers early Tuesday morning.

Egypt has brokered Gaza truces in the past, but they sometimes take time. An Egyptian official said an agreement by Israel and Palestinian factions had earlier been secured to cease hostilities on Tuesday night but had worked out.
