Reports from Damascus, quoting bankers, said Syria has pumped new cash into the country printed in Russia to finance its fiscal deficit.

Reports from Damascus, quoting bankers, said Syria has pumped new cash into the country printed in Russia to finance its fiscal deficit, after turmoil and Western sanctions wiped out revenues and led to severe inflation and economic crisis.

Reuters cited four Damascus-based bankers as saying that new banknotes printed in Russia were circulating in trial amounts in the Damascus and Aleppo, the first such step since the uprising against against Assad’s rule began in March 2011.

The four bankers said the new notes were being used not just to replace worn out currency but to ensure that salaries and other government expenses were paid.

Some experts say the move could increase inflation and deteriorate the economic crisis.

At least 10,000 people have died, mostly civilians, since the crackdown began in March last year, according to the UN, while opposition groups and human rights groups put the number at more than 14,000.

The four bankers, along with one business leader in touch with officials, claimed the new money had been printed in Russia, although they were not able to give the name of the firm that printed it.

“The Russians sent sample new banknotes that were approved and the first order has been delivered. I understand some new banknotes have been injected into the market,” one of the bankers told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

However, the central bank later denied through state media that any new currency had been circulated.

Russia a long standing ally of Syria, which has vetoed all resolutions against Syria has no sanctions in place that would bar Russian firms from printing money for Syria.

Inflation in Syria hit 31.5% in April, though Reuters said the central bank considers it manageable.
