The Syrian government has permitted the UN an other international organizations to send aid workers and supplies to four hard-hit provinces as Bashar al-Assad declares western diplomats personae non gratae.

According to AP, the agreement with Damascus and representatives of the government in Geneva will allow convoys with supplies and aid workers from nine U.N. agencies and seven other non-governmental organizations to enter Daraa, Deir el-Zour, Homs and Idlib within days, said John Ging of the U.N.operations director for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, where more than one million people are in need of aid.

Speaking to reporters in Geneva, John Ging, said a progress is in the making as President Bashar Assad’s government agreed to receive humanitarian aid.

It will be the first time humanitarian workers aside from the International Committee of the Red Cross have been permitted to enter Syria as UN teams already have been sent to scout those areas, said John Ging, according to Al Jazeera.

“Whether this is a breakthrough or not will be evident in the coming days and weeks, and it will be measured not in rhetorics, not in agreements, but in action on the ground,” he said.

Meanwhile, Syria has also decided to declare 17 foreign diplomats personae non gratae.

The ambassadors of the US, Turkey, U.K, France, among others, were declared unwelcome in the country. Also Canada, Italy, Spain and various embassy staff members from Belgium, Bulgaria and Germany were also expelled.

The expelling of western ambassadors came as Western countries expelled Syrian diplomats in the wake of the Houla massacre of where 108 died.

Widespread violence continued on Tuesday, particularly in Latakia, a western port city, where 15 members of the security forces, three rebels and two civilians were killed, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

State media, continues to blame the killings on “terrorist groups”.

Almost 300 UN unarmed military observers have been deployed in Syria to monitor a putative ceasefire in place since April 12, but which has been violated every day since then.
