A meeting between the three coalition leaders on Monday failed to end in agreement over the 11.5 billion euro package in public spending cuts demanded by the troika.

The situation remains fuzzy after the meeting of the three coalition leaders yesterday afternoon. After their meeting with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, Democratic Left leader Fotis Kouvelis and PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos spoke of an agreement on strategic planning, while FinMin Yannis Stournaras referred to the need to come up with the “optimal mix of measures”. Government source said the intention of the government is to announce measures at the same time with the launch of the renegotiation of the MoU.

Political leaders agreed to meet again in the coming days, according to news reports, while the troika’s view remains unknown, which will remain in Athens to be briefed on the measures and proceed with their evaluation. “We are looking for the perfect mix of EUR 11.5 billion worth of cuts,” Stournaras said immediately after the meeting of the three political leaders, which, he stressed, “went pretty well.”

“We should not cancel the possibility of renegotiation and the ability to keep the country in the eurozone,” said FinMin, adding that the coalition leaders agreed on the need of coming up with EUR 11.5 billion.

On his part, Evangelos Venizelos stressed the need to stop recession, apply growth measures, advance structural reforms and proceed with privatizations. Exiting the Maximos Mansion, PASOK leader said that the leaders discussed the overall framework within which the country will emerge from the crisis. Venizelos added that in addition to the three parties involved in shaping the government policies, there is a need for a national commitment to the task. Furthermore he accused SYRIZA of welcoming the prospect the country to suffer a disaster.

Democratic Left leader Fotis Kouvelis gave the outline of what was discussed and said that the leaders agreed on the need to promote an overall strategic plan to tackle the crisis but not, at least for now, on any package of new measures. Kouvelis said that the meeting focused on “many, large and thorny problems” the country is facing and stressed that “Greek society cannot deal with any more weights.” Kouvelis added: “there is a need for a comprehensive strategic plan, which will include the extension [of the bailout agreement] as agreed in the strategic alliance of the three parties.”
