U.S. ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens is confirmed to have died in Tuesday's attack on the US consulate in Libya's eastern city of Benghazi.

U.S. ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens is confirmed to have died in Tuesday’s attack on the US consulate in Libya’s eastern city of Benghazi. The Libyan ambassador and three staff members were killed when gunmen fired rockets at them,” A Libyan official in Benghazi told Reuters.

The report of the death of the ambassador and staff members follows the attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya and the U.S. Embassy in Cairo on Tuesday, over a film by a U.S.- Jewish producer that ridicules and insults the Prophet Muhammad.

“I condemn these barbaric acts in the strongest possible terms. This is an attack on America, Libya and free people everywhere,” Deputy Prime Minister of Libya Mustafa Abushagur said in a post on his Twitter.

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton confirmed and condemned the deaths of the American personnel in Benghazi.

“The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation. But let me be clear: There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind, ” she said in a statement.

According to Alyunaniya correspondent in Libya Rajab Benghuzzi: “Most Libyans here are against the attack at the US consulate which they believe was an act of provocation to create chaos in a time where Libya is struggling to overcome the turmoil following the ouster of former leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Hours before the attack at the U.S consulate in Benghazi hundreds of mainly protesters in Egypt marched to the U.S. Embassy in downtown Cairo, scaling its walls, and taking down the American flag from a pole in the courtyard.

The U.S. Embassy said on its Twitter account that there will be no visa services on Wednesday because of the protests. The U.S. Embassy in Libya also announced that the Consular Section will reopen on Monday, August 27.

According to Wall Street Journal The movie, “Innocence of Muslims,” was directed and produced by an Israeli-American developer who characterized it as a political effort to call attention to the hypocrisies of Islam. It has been promoted by Terry Jones, the Florida pastor whose burning of Qurans previously sparked deadly riots worldwide.

A 13-minute trailer of the movie that sparked the protests, posted on the website YouTube in an original English version and another dubbed into Arabic, depicts Muhammad in an overtly ridiculing way, showing him having sex and calling for massacres.

Sam Bacile, an American citizen who said he produced, directed and wrote the two-hour film, said he had not anticipated such a furious reaction. According to AP Bacile said he is Jewish and familiar with the region. Bacile said the film was produced in English and he doesn’t know who dubbed it in Arabic.

The two-hour movie, “Innocence of Muslims,” cost $5 million to make and was financed with the help of more than 100 Jewish donors, said Bacile, who wrote and directed it, according to the Denver Post. Though Bacile was apologetic about the American who was killed as a result of the outrage over his film, he blamed lax embassy security.

Tuesday’s protests came on the eleventh anniversary of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, when U.S. cities were targeted by hijacked planes for the incident.

The “Friends of Syria” conference, which was held in Paris on Friday, called in its final statement for President Bashar al-Assad to step down.

Members of Syria’s opposition at the Paris meeting said the international community is still moving too slowly and called for a military measure to end the crisis, according to Al Arabiya.

The meeting came amid reports that Manaf Tlas, a Syrian general and personal friend of Assad has defected and fled Syria.

According to French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius on Friday, the son of Mustafa Tlas, who served as defence minister for 30 years under former president Hafez al-Assad and Bashar al-Assad had defected and was heading for Paris, Al Jazeera reported.

The meeting in Paris follows a gathering in Tunis and another in Istanbul, both of which called in vain for stiffer action against Assad’s government. China and Russia did not attend either of those meetings.

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged world powers to show Russia and China would “pay a price” for blocking progress toward a democratic transition in Syria.

In response to Clinton’s comments Russia said on Friday, that Washington’s suggestion that Moscow should “pay a price” for helping the Syrian regime stay in power was “incorrect” and refused such allegations.

There is evidence of widespread as well as systematic violations being perpetrated as part of state policy to exact revenge against communities supporting the opposition.

In Syria there is fresh evidence of widespread as well as systematic violations, including crimes against humanity and war crimes, being perpetrated as part of state policy to exact revenge against communities suspected of supporting the opposition and to intimidate people into submission, Amnesty International said in a report.

“This disturbing new evidence of an organized pattern of grave abuses highlights the pressing need for decisive international action to stem the tide of increasingly widespread attacks against the civilian population,” said Donatella Rovera, Amnesty International’s Senior Crisis Adviser.

Although not granted official permission by the Syrian authorities to enter the country, Amnesty International was able to investigate the situation on the ground in northern Syria. Amnesty International visited 23 towns and villages in the Aleppo and Idlib governorates, including areas where Syrian government forces launched large scale attacks including during negotiations over the implementation of the UN-Arab League-sponsored six-point ceasefire agreement in March/April. In every town and village visited grieving families described to Amnesty International how their relatives – young and old and including children – were dragged away and shot dead by soldiers – who in some cases then set the victims’ bodies on fire.

Soldiers and shabiha militias burned down homes and properties and fired indiscriminately into residential areas, killing and injuring civilian bystanders. Those who were arrested, including the sick and elderly, were routinely tortured, sometimes to death. Many have been subjected to enforced disappearance; their fate remains unknown.

Meanwhile, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said he will call on the UN Security Council to make United Nations envoy Kofi Annan’s peace plan for Syria mandatory, according to Al Jazeera.

France would propose that Annan’s six-point plan be enforced under the UN’s Chapter Seven provision, he said on Wednesday, describing the conflict in Syria as a “civil war”.

Fabius said he hoped Russia would agree to using Chapter Seven, a measures which can authorise the use of force, and he said that a no-fly zone was another option under discussion.

Earlier on Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told a news conference during a brief visit to Iran that Moscow was supplying “anti-air defence systems” to Damascus which does not violate international law.

On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton call on Russia to end arms deliveries to Syria, saying that Syria was “spiralling toward civil war”.

Clinton said she supported co-operation with Russia but stood firm on her call for an end to arms deliveries, a day after she charged that Moscow was sending “attack helicopters” to Syria that could “escalate the conflict”, Al Jazeera reported.

Friday’s massacre of more than 100 civilians, many of them children, in Houla has brought widespread criticism and triggered calls for the West to take more robust action in Syria, despite Russian and Chinese opposition.

Clinton on her first stop on a European tour, in remarks to Danish students, Clinton said every day of slaughter in Syria was increasing the case for tougher international action. She explained why Libya was different than Syria, where Western-led air strikes last year helped bring an end to Muammar Qaddafi’s rule.

Clinton said Syria had a more diverse society with greater ethnic divisions, no unified opposition, stronger air defenses and a much more capable military than Libya’s, Reuters reported.

Above all, she stressed that such action, including military action, would need support from Syria’s ally, Russia, and the rest of the world community. Russia and China have twice vetoed U.N. Security Council sanctions against Assad regime.

Russia’s continued support for Assad “is going to help contribute to a civil war,” Clinton warned, according to Al Arabiya.

Clinton did not give any alternatives to United Nations-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan’s efforts to try to halt the crisis in Syria.

The Houla massacre and the discovery of new execution-style killing since then has raised the pressure for international action.

Meanwhile, Syrian rebels yesterday warned they will resume their defense of civilians if the government does not return to the peace plan by Friday.

The Syrian regime on Thursday blamed the Houla massacreon anti-government armed groups.

ecretary-General Ban Ki-moon praised the people and the Government of Algeria for the peaceful conduct of legislative elections last week, and welcomed the increased representation of women in the new parliament.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon praised the people and the Government of Algeria for the peaceful conduct of legislative elections last week, and welcomed the increased representation of women in the new parliament, Ban’s spokesman said in a statement.

“The Secretary-General encourages the Government of Algeria and all political parties in the country to cooperate and work in an inclusive and peaceful manner to implement political and constitutional reforms and strengthen the democratic process in Algeria,” Mr. Ban’s spokesperson added.

The Secretary-General had, at the request of the Algerian Government, sent a High-Level Panel to the North African country to observe the electoral process involved in choosing members of its People’s National Assembly and keep him abreast of developments.

The election in Algeria finished last Thursday, when 24,916 candidates competed for 462 seats in the new parliament.

According to media reports, Algeria’s main ruling party, the National Liberation Front, won almost half of the seats in the 462-seat legislative body, with the National Democratic Rally reportedly finishing second with 68 seats in the National People’s Assembly, while the Alliance of Green Algeria came third with 48 seats, the news agency said.

The spokesperson said Mr. Ban reiterated the continued commitment of the United Nations to support Algeria’s efforts to achieve socio-economic development and democratic reforms.

U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton stated how international and nongovernmental organizations observed the elections and how the United States looks forward to working with the newly elected National Popular Assembly, accordint to CNN.

“These elections and the high number of women elected are a welcome step in Algeria’s progress toward democratic reform,” Clinton said in a statement.
