There were 290 out of a total of 300 MPs in the parliamentary chamber. Of the latter, 223 voted for Meimarakis, 67 cast blank ballots and one vote was invlalid.

In his first speech after his election, he called on members of the 300-seat House to back the efforts of the new coalition government to help Greece get out of a economic crisis.

Absent from the session were ND leader Antonis Samaras, who is recovering from eye surgery, former prime minister George Papandreou, who was in Brussels for the European Socialist Party meeting, as well as ministers Dimitris Avramopoulos, Christos Staikouras and Kostis Hatzidakis, who were in Brussels for the EU summit, according to Kathimerini.

Meimarakis, the sole candidate proposed for the post, was born in Athens in 1953. A veteran New Democracy member in parliament since 1989 has studied law, political sciences and public administration. He has been re-elected in all general elections, has served as defence minister and is president of the Konstantinos Karamanlis Foundation for Democracy.
