Fifty-five were killed and nearly 400 others were injured in two massive explosions that shook the Syrian capital early on Thursday, Syria’s interior ministry said.

Ban Ki-moon and the United Nations Security Council strongly condemned deadly bomb attacks in Damascus on Thursday, urging all parties to cease armed violence and ”comprehensively to implement” and comply with a U.N.-backed peace plan as the Syrian permanent representative to the U.N. accused al-Qaeda of being behind the attacks against his country.

The council “reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation.”

Meanwhile, in a speech during the meeting of UN Security Council sub-committees, al-Jaafari called on the Security Council to transform its condemnation of terrorism into action through taking all measures required to stop the “terrorist acts” targeting Syria and exerting pressure on the states which support these acts, State-run SANA reported.

Syria’s representative said that he had a list of 26 terrorists some of them are affiliated to al-Qaeda, and a list of 12 foreign terrorists who were killed in Syria would be sent to the Security Council and the UN Secretary-General, pointing out that the list includes the names of French, British and Belgian terrorists.

The ambassador later told reporters that those detained were mainly Tunisians and Libyans but there was one Palestinian and one Jordanian
, according to Al Arabiya.

Meanwhile, the White House condemned Thursday’s suicide car bombings in Damascus, which it said were not representative of the opposition to Syrian President Assad, Al Arabiya reported.

“We do not believe this kind of attack that you saw in Damascus is representative of the opposition. There are clearly extremist elements in Syria, as we have said all along, who are trying to take advantage of the chaos in that country, chaos brought about by Assad’s brutal assault on his own people,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said.
