According to reports, the military rulers have called for an emergency meeting with representatives of parties and parliament members.

Clashes have erupted between assailants and supporters of Egypt’s Islamist political parties who had gathered near the defence ministry in Cairo, leaving 11 people dead and nearly 50 wounded, security and hospital officials said to AlJazeera.

According to reports, the military rulers have called for an emergency meeting with representatives of parties and parliament members.

At least 40 more injuries have been received at the field hospital in al-Khalifa al-Maamoun Street, in Abbasiya neighborhood, bringing the total number of injuries received in four days of clashes to 150, according to AlArabiya.

Protesters fought the attack with stones, and set up a second field hospital to treat the wounded, who included cases of broken limbs and suffocation due to inhaling teargas.

Some of the the protesters are supporters of Hazem Salah Abu Ismail, an Islamist who was barred from the presidential race because his mother held dual Egyptian-U.S. citizenship, which violates eligibility rules to run in the election.

Meanwhile, media reports, stated that Egypt’s Supreme Council for Armed Forces (SCAF) has called for an emergency meeting with representatives of different Egyptian parties and parliament members on Wednesday.

The meeting would reportedly focus on the latest developments regarding the panel designated to write the new constitution as well as the eruprion and clashes near the Defense Ministry premises in Cairo.

The meeting is also expected to underline the relationship between the government and the parliament, as the later threatened to withdraw the vote of confidence from the government of Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri, AP reported.

The violence is the latest episode in more than a year of unrest in Egypt follows the ouster of longtime authoritarian ruler Hosni Mubarak and will likely fuel more tensions just three weeks ahead of presidential elections.

The military generals who took over from Mubarak in February last year have vowed to hand over power by July 1.
