Violent crackdown persists in Syria as activists say security forces have stormed student dorms at a university in northwestern Syria following anti-government protests there, killing at least four students and wounding several others.

More than 50 students have been arrested, according to AP, citing the Local Coordination Committees.

Youtube videos uploaded today by activists show massive protests taking place at the university in response to last night’s raid.

Student activist Thaer al-Ahmed told AP said security forces and pro-regime gunmen fired tear gas and live ammunition to disperse the students at Aleppo University after entering the students’ residences late Wednesday night.

According to the Syrian Revolution official page on facebook, more than 2000 security forces and pro-regime armed men have stormed the university.

Meanwhile, Lieberman US senator voiced his support for the Syrian opposition Wednesday, following meetings with top Lebanese officials and a visit to Syrian refugees in northern Lebanon.

Lieberman visited the northern Lebanese region of Wadi Khaled escoted by the Lebanese army, which is located near the Syrian border and houses the majority of an estimated 24,000 Syrians who have sought refuge in Lebanon, according to AFP.

Most independent media are barred from Syria or have their movements restricted, making it hard to verify such reports.Lebanon needs to help the Syrian opposition and offer further assistance to refugees fleeing unrest in their home country, U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman, who is on an official visit to Lebanon along with U.S. official Jeffrey Feltman, said Wednesday.

Lieberman also expressed concern that countries in the region and around the world were not doing enough to back the Syrian opposition.

Massive protests were reported in several neighborhoods in the capital Damascus, the biggest of which was reported in al-Salheiya region, Al Arabiya reported citing Syrian activists.

Random shootings were reported in al-Hamama village in Idlib, activists said, and mortar shells hit Rastan in Homs.

New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) condemned and accused Syrian government forces killed at least 95 civilians and burned or destroyed hundreds of houses during a two-week offensive in northern Idlib governorate shortly before the ceasefire, Human Rights Watch said in a report released Wednesday. The attacks happened in late March and early April, as United Nations special envoy Kofi Annan was negotiating with the Syrian government to end the fighting.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is “scaling up food assistance” to reach a quarter million people by the end of this month inside Syria.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is “scaling up food assistance” to reach a quarter million people by the end of this month inside Syria with plans to double the caseload to reach 500,000 people in the coming weeks.

“As the conflict continues, Syrians in areas affected by the violence are struggling to feed their families and WFP is deeply concerned about the potential for food insecurity,” said WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin.

In a statement, the U.N.’s World Food Program (WFP) said that it was expanding its assistance at the request of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent and stood ready to increase its humanitarian mission in the country further “when access permits.”

U.N. aid agencies have been banned from entering Syria but a joint assessment mission carried out last month with Syrian authorities estimated that at least one million people needed humanitarian aid, reuters reports.

WFP has been providing food assistance for up to 100,000 people a month in cities such as Homs, Hama, Idleb and Damascus. It also began distributing food to Syrian refugees living in neighbouring Jordan.

WFP’s emergency operation for Syria began in August 2011 with a budget currently estimated at US$37.4 million and it is still seeking funding, as so far less than half that amount has been secured.

More than 9,000 people have died in Syria in 13 months of fighting sparked by a popular uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. The U.N. Security Council approved on Saturday the deployment of up to 300 unarmed military observers to monitor a ceasefire which remains “incomplete” according to Secretary-Genral, Ban Ki Moon.

Nearly 60 people were killed on Monday in violence across Syria, the majority of them civilians in the central city of Hama, according to the Syrian Local Coordination Committee, on Tuesday.
