The jury of a federal court in San Jose, California made up of seven men and two women found that Samsung smartphones and devices infringed upon six of seven patents of Apple.

Apple who was initially seeking seeking $2.5 billion in damages, and called on the jury Aug. 21 to impose a heavy penalty on Samsung was awarded $1.05 billion in damages.

Apple and Samsung will return to the courtroom next month to argue over Apple’s request for an injunction to stop the infringing products from being sold.

This could lead to an outright ban on sales of key Samsung products and will likely solidify Apple’s dominance of the exploding mobile computing market, according to Reuters.

In a statement released after the verdict was read, Samsung called the decision “a loss for the American consumer” because it would give consumers less choices and push prices up.

Earlier this year, sales of Samsung’s smartphones surpassed Apple’s for the first time. Together, the two companies account for more than half of all global smartphone sales.

According to Reuters, Apple has already won other major victories against Samsung as the sale of Samsung tablets are banned in Germany and its three latest Galaxy smartphone models are banned in the Netherlands.

Earlier on Friday a South Korean court ordered each company to stop selling some smartphones and tablets in the country and pay  small amount in damages after ruling that they infringed each other’s patents.
